Cam Belt change on 1.2 L

Cam Belt change on 1.2 L

Postby processpaul on Mon May 07, 2007 11:06 pm

Hi people

Just picked up an 02 1.2 S for my girlfriend. 1 owner and only has 20000 miles on the clock.

Any ideas on when the cambelt should be changed. Is it at 4 years?

Would it be prudent to get it done as its been in stop start/ short journey use.

Thanks alot.

The 1.2's don't have a timing belt. They have a chain which *should* last the life of the vehicle.I.e. it doesnt need replacing.

Hi there,
Sorry to make my first post such a 'mistrusting' one, but this is exactly why I was looking for a forum such as this. (I'm not doubting anyone's word)

I have just bought an '02 Ibiza 1.2 S with 42600 on the clock and was under the impression I'd have to change the belt soon. So I asked a mechanic - perhaps not a very good one (?) - and was told that my 'belt' will need changing in the next 6 months.

Is the information above definitely correct? Is there no belt? Do I not have to have the 'chain' replaced / looked at?

Great news if correct, but just wanted to make sure.
Thanks very much
:)

EDIT:
-------

Just had this confirmed by my local dealership.
The 1.2 DOES have a chain and DOES NOT have a belt.

Great !!

Thanks very much and apologies for doubting you, had to be sure
:)

As far as I was aware, all Mk4 1.2 Ibiza's are chain driven.

ive got a 1.2 ibiza
and i was told my cambelt or timing chain had slipped
due to the cambelt not being changed for 4years.

Wether ive had the work done by a dodgey mechanic
or whatever :)

I think that that is mainly "porkie pies". The cam drive chain should not need replaced like a cambelt until it has become too noisy - so could last the life of the engine (in theory). What happens with these 1.2 VAG engines seems to be that the original design was a bit weak or suspect, so it is very easy for the chain to jump teeth and when this happens, mainly caused by the engine oil pressure not getting up in time to pressurise the chain tensioner, then the pistons can touch the valves - no good. There seems to have been an update kit that should be fitted to minimise the chances of this happening - but it seems to be happening to a lot of VAG 1.2 engines so maybe not many kits are being fitted in time!
