Thats exactly what I did when I MOTed my Land Rover the other week. The spare was illegal (its a cross-ply tyre, and the 4 road wheel have radials, so its technically illegal), so I just took it off and went to the garage for the MOT without it.
Yup, no problem at all. Like I said, they'll mention it in the advisorys, but thats just so that you are aware, and doesn't make the slightest bit of difference to the test result.
