Power loss under acceleration

Hello

I've got a problem whereby my car loses power (occassionally) when accelerating, it doesn't mis-fire, just drops down to idling, if I lift off and re-engage the accelerator it clears.

Not fun on the way home after a night shift, or pulling away from a junction with the kids in the back.

Does any one have any pointers?

Thanks

Steve

what do you mean it goes to idling? Hmmm I got a black 1.2 ibiza mk and sometimes it doesnt feel as nippy as it usually is under acceleration but I dont think it's really a fault with the car.

when my car feels like it's in a flat spot is when i plant my foot down in 4th gear but it doesnt do hardly anything but most of the time there's usually a pull? Anything like this? Maybe our cars are too underpowered :p ¬_¬"

When pulling away at a junction or driving normally, there is a very noticable drop in power, the engine doesn't stop or splutter (which I had on a different car with a dirty fuel filter), the engine speed drops to idling as if the accelerator is not working, lifting off and then replying pressure to the accelerator brings back the power.

It's not the same as if the car is under a heavy load, this is a very sudden change in revs and often causes an engine brake effect.

I haven't been able to pin-point any particular rev range or gear, it seems to be random, I first noticed on the motorway (little/no gear changes, speed 50-80), but it mostly happened on back roads now (many gear changes, speed 0-60). And so far it's happened till I've lifted off and re-applied the power on the accelerator.

Thankfully I'm alert when driving, so it hasn't got me in any close situations.

Some of the VAG engines have drive by wire, throttle sensors basically on the accelerator pedal. These tell the ecu in what position the throttle pedal is in and hence making the car go. Might be wrong, but obviously if the sensor is not working properly then it could cause the problem you describe!

Sure some one will be along to correct me! :)

Yes, just been down the dealers (SEAT camberley, they deserve to be shamed), initial diagnosis they gave after my description, was it was caused by a brake light, cost to fix £120. Didn't like the sound of that, so asked if they could plug it in and diagnose, cost £50.

And then got laughed out the office when I said I would go elsewhere.
